What is Accessible Science News?
Accessible Science News is a new feature on Science with Sandy which will
premier January 2016. Science students will share up-to-date science news with other students in written articles and
a brief weekly newscast.
Accessible Science News will be free for educational use.
What will the student writers, editors, and reporters do?
Student writers will choose from current science press releases and
summarize their favorite stories at a fifth grade reading level. Each writer will share one to two articles each month.
Apply to be a student writer by filling out the Application.
Student editors will ensure the quality of each article posted in Accessible Science News by suggesting edits to
articles proposed by the writers and approving quality articles. Editors will evaluate 3 - 6 articles each month.

Student reporters will create short news videos about the articles approved by the editors. The videos will be compiled
into a weekly news broadcast. Reporters will create 2 - 4 videos each month.

What are the requirements for the student writers, editors, and
reporters?
Student writers, editors, and reporters must be between 13 and 18 years old
as of December 1, 2015. Applications are due by December 10, 2015. Training will be provided.
What do the student writers, editors, and reporters receive?
Student writers, editors, and reporters will each receive a personal
Science with Sandy email account and will gain experience to enhance their college applications and resumes.
After a probationary period, writers, editors, and reporters become eligible for the Science with Sandy Scholarship
Fund and will receive a personalized Science with Sandy lab coat.
What is the probationary period?
Student writers, editors, and reporters will need to meet the requirements
of their postion for 6 consecutive months to be eligible for scholarships and a lab coat. Writers need to have one or
more articles accepted for submission each month, editors need to approve at least three articles each month, and
reporters need to have at least two videos accepted each month to meet the position requirements for that month.
